The following hints will help minimize your costs and insure that your finished quilt is an heirloom that you will be pleased with.
1. Trim excess seams or points that may cause lumps. Remove all
loose threads that can show through the quilt top or backing. Press
all seams flat . . . not open where possible.
2. Individual layers are mounted on the quilting machine separately.
DO NOT
baste layers together.
3.
Please use a safety pin to mark the head end of the quilt backing
and the pieced quilt top. Many quilting designs are one way and we
need to know which will be at the head end of the quilt.
4.
Backing must be 8 inches larger than
your quilt top length and width. Smaller quilts i.e. lap quilts or
baby quilts require slightly less. Backing must be squared and
selvages removed from any seam that will be quilted over. Squared
backing will have both sides the same length, with 90º
degree corners. Selvages, especially in a backing seam will cause
undesirable pulling and lead to puckering along the seam.
5. Batting must be 8 inches larger than your quilt top length and width. If you are supplying your own batting please discuss this with GNQ.
6. Stitch around the outer edge seams of your quilt top borders; stitch just less than a ¼” from the outer edge so it will not show after the binding is finished. The quilt top will be gently pulled during the machine quilting so it will lay flat. This will prevent the seams from coming unstitched during the quilting process.
